This past weekend, the Oklahoma Route 66 Association took part in Tulsa’s Route 66 Road Fest for the fourth year. I saw people from all over the country, including most of the other Route 66 Associations. There were history exhibits, fun activities, book signings, a speaker series, a huge indoor car show, and so much more. Thank you to our volunteers who greeted people at our booth and helped us raise money for our Centennial Events next year! It was very successful. We’ll have a more in-depth event report soon.
On Sunday, June 22nd, one of our volunteers brought us a donation: a box of memories from a friend. We’ve started to go through the contents of this generous gift…and this is the kind of donation that you cannot put a value on. We are very honored to be the caretakers of the Route 66 memories of Wayne Eggerman.
Charles 'Wayne' Eggerman was born in Tulsa on September 27, 1946. He served un the US Marines during the Vietnam War (1966-1970) and worked as an aerospace engineer. He loved cars and he loved Route 66. In 1988, he built a garage for his 35th Anniversary Limited Edition Corvette. When he traveled the Mother Road, it was usually in his 1955 Chevrolet - which he eventually drove from end-to-end! He also had a 1932 Ford that won numerous awards at local and national car shows and also traveled in a 1964 Corvette Stingray and a 2004 40th Anniversary Mustang. Wayne passed away in 2023.
In addition to numerous photographs from all up and down Historic Route 66 (most from the late 1990s and early 2000s) this collection includes contemporary maps, newspaper articles, Oklahoma Route 66 Trip Guides, and other materials he had gathered in preparation for and in celebration of his trips on the Mother Road.
As we are able, we will digitize some of the collection and share it with the greater Route 66 community. For now, here is a sampling of the Wayne Eggerman Collection.
